The African Spoonbill is a large white bird with a red face and distinctive bill shape. It is unlikely to be confused with any other bird. It is a common bird, gregarious and nomadic in response to water levels.
It is usually quiet, but does give guttural croaks and grunts.
Behaviour and habitat
The Spoonbill is found wading in shallow aquatic margins. Its food consists of small fish and aquatic invertebrates.
The bird is monogamous and colonial. It builds a stick platform nest usually in reeds, but sometimes in trees over water.
