Giant Kingfisher

Giant Kingfisher

This common, striking bird is found along the waterways of Botswana. It is recognisable from its large size, rufous breast, shaggy crest and speckled throat and under belly.

It has a loud, harsh and nasal kek or kakh-kakh-kakh.

Behaviour and habitat

It is most often seen sitting quietly above water looking for prey. It can be found at any water bodies that have fish and where there are perches from which to hunt. Its food is mainly fish, which it beats against the branch until dead. Its nest is a tunnel dug up to 3m into a vertical bank close to the water’s edge.
