Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) promotes best practice management systems across all
tourism industry sectors with a view to facilitate tourism development that is environmentally
sustainable. Botswana Tourism also ensures collaborative approach with relevant stakeholders both
public and private to raise the profile of the organisation.
Eco-Certification System
In partnership with the University of Botswana through the BIOKAVANGO Project, Botswana Tourism Organisation
completed the development of the first ever Botswana Ecotourism Certification System, comprising of standards
(accommodation and eco-tour), logos, certificates and other associated documentation.
The completion of the ecotourism certification system demonstrates the BTO’s strong commitment to
environmentally responsible tourism and the continued commitment to working with the industry and those
associated with it on the development of tourism facilities and services that can position the country as a
leading sustainable ecotourism destination.

WTTC Tourism for Tomorrow Award 2010 Winner
Botswana Tourism Organisation won the Destination stewardship Award for 2010 for “The Okavango
Delta Ramsar Site (ODRS): a unique 55,374 km2 water and game rich area within Botswana’s desert
environment. It includes the Tsodilo Hills (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Moremi Game Reserve,
Wildlife Management Areas and community lands.
