Grading Standards

The Third Edition of the Grading Standards formulated by the Botswana Bureau of Standards consists of the following parts, under the general title Hotel and Related Establishments.

Grading Requirements

Part 1: Fully serviced hotels - Specification

An accommodation establishment that provides breakfast, lunch, dinner and personal service, for the convenience of the guests.

Part 2: Selected serviced hotel - Specification

An accommodation establishment that provides breakfast, multipurpose public facilities and selected personal services.

Part 3: Game lodge and tended camp - Specification

An accommodation establishment with fully serviced or self-catering facilities situated in a game reserve, national park, wildlife management area or heritage/historical site. It primarily utilises outdoor activities to sell exclusive packages for guests to visit natural or historical locations. The lodge and its facilities are usually for the exclusive use of resident guests.

Part 4: Bed and Breakfast - Specification

An accommodation establishment with a minimum of two guest bedrooms and a maximum of five guest bedrooms, operating from a private property that provides breakfast and has an option with regard to the provision of lunch and dinner. The owner of the establishment shall reside within the premises and public areas can be shared by the host and the guests.

Part 5: Guesthouses - Specification

An accommodation establishment operating from a private property or purpose built property with a minimum of six and a maximum of ten guest bedrooms, providing a breakfast service and having an option with regard to the provision of lunch, dinner and of which the public areas are for the exclusive use of the guests.

Part 6: Self - catering establishment - Specification

An accommodation establishment that provides the facilities and equipment necessary for guests to prepare their own meals with a minimum of four (4) studios and/or a minimum of four (4) units with a maximum of three (3) bedrooms. Housekeeping shall be provided.

Part 7: Remote Camping Ground- Specification

Refers to a serviced camping ground located in areas with limited or no access to basic public utilities and services and can offer facilities for caravans and motor homes in protected and public areas. These grounds can consist of a number of individual camping sites and offer facilities and services, at least water, toilets and showers. They are maintained and cleaned regularly and can be booked by general public, mobile safari operators as well as by motor homes and vehicles towing a caravan.

Part 8: Urban Camping Ground-Specification

Refers to serviced camping ground located in areas with access to basic public utilities and services and can offer facilities for caravans and motor homes. They should consist of individual camping sites and have to offer adequate ablution facilities and services. They are maintained and cleaned regularly and can be booked by general public, mobile safari operators as well as by motor homes and vehicles towing a caravan.

Part 9: Wilderness Camping Ground- Specification

Refers to a remote un-serviced camping ground. It is a designated location in a wilderness or protected area with a Global Positioning Sytem (GPS) coordinate and a signpost at the ground as the only orientation and identification mark, wilderness camping grounds do not usually consist  of individual sites but ratherused exclusively by one group.

Part 10: Non-Participation Tented Mobile Safaris- Specification

Guests do not participate in any camp duties; dedicated and skilled safari staff handles all aspects of camp chores and services.

Part 11: Participation tented mobile Safaris- Specification

This include active (full) and semi participation of guests. Guests actively participate in all or certain camp duties i.e set up/ dismantling of camp, cooking, cleaning etc. No service staff accompanies the safari on active participation safaris but service staff accompanies the safari on semi participation tours.

These standards outline the criteria by which the establishments are to be assigned different grades and class/categories.

The standards are reviewed after every five years through a Botswana Bureau of Standards established Technical Committee which consists mainly of industry stakeholders.
